Newsagency stationery sales on the up

Newsagency commentator has a bright crystal ball.

Mark Fletcher, newsagency owner and industry commentator, believes newsagencies have the opportunity to increase sales of stationery items by 10 per cent in 2025.

Writing in his Newsagency Blog, Fletcher said: Stationery sales will be good, up in newsagencies that have a range tuned to local everyday needs as well as a focus on offering stationery for those who love stationery.

"This is an important distinction - people who buy stationery because they have to, focus on convenience and function whereas those who buy stationery because they love it, buy because they have found something not often seen elsewhere," he said.

"Newsagencies can play well in both spaces can thrive. I think stationery revenue can be up 10 per cent this year if we put our mind to it,” he said.

Fletcher added that online presented the biggest opportunity for newsagencies in the year ahead -  by reaching people who will never set foot in a newsagency.

“In one of my own shops where our website is barely eight months old, we’ve already done $25,000 in online sales in 2025, with nothing spent on marketing.

“I know of a newsagent mature in online who has done $40,000 this year online. What we achieve is only constrained by our imagination,” he said.
