Poor seating a pain for home workers

Survey reveals an uncomfortable truth about home office chairs.

A new survey has revealed why many American work-from-homers are having back and neck problems through the use of outdated and poorly-designed chairs.

In fact, the survey found many home workers did not even use chairs, relying on items such as milk crates, bar stools, yoga balls, patio furniture and even the floor while working.

The survey, commissioned by ergonomic furniture maker X-Chair, found a staggering 90 per cent of respondents understood how sitting impacted their overall health, but nearly half (49.6 per cent) still used an outdated chair, with 90.6 per cent sitting for four to eight hours a day.

As a result, more than half of respondents (54.6 per cent) experienced physical pain due to not having an appropriate office chair, with 46.2 per cent reporting pain in the shoulders, back and neck, with 34.3 per cent of respondents citing pain solely in the back.

Officeworks’ mega chair sales

During a recent investor presentation by Wesfarmers, Officework’s managing director Sarah Hunter said the retailer was on track to sell one million chairs this year, up from 600,000 in 2019.
