Amazon puts more pressure on its home workers
Corporate bosses more keen on people in the office.
Amazon Australia employees who work less than three days a week in the office will find their chances of receiving a promotion a lot slimmer.
According to a report in the Australian Financial Review, the tech giant has enforced the three-day rule globally – including in Australia – after media reports revealed that the company had introduced it in the US.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said it was easier for the company to strengthen its workplace culture when staff spent most of their time working together in the office.
“Promotions are one of the many ways we support employees’ growth and development, and there are a variety of factors we consider when determining an employee’s readiness for the next level,” Amazon spokeswoman Jess Makin said.
“Like any company, we expect employees who are being considered for promotion to be in compliance with company guidelines and policies.”
The news comes as white-collar employers ramp up efforts to get staff back to the office after large swathes of the workforce were made to work from home full-time during the pandemic.
ANZ told staff that their annual bonuses may be cut if they failed to spend at least 50 per cent of their scheduled working hours in the office, putting the bank in line with Suncorp Group and Origin Energy.
Amid signs that more companies are preparing to lay off staff over the next 12 months, Australian Industry Group chief executive Innes Willox said that regularly working from home would almost certainly play to people’s detriment in the end, particularly when head counts are being assessed..
