Brisbane promotes ‘Friday in the City’
Retail body adds support to city shopping initiative.
The Australian Retailers Association (ARA), has announced its support for the ‘Friday in the City’ campaign - a joint initiative between the Property Council of Australia and Brisbane City Council aimed at getting people back and shopping in the Brisbane CBD.
ARA CEO Paul Zahra said with international tourists and students missing and office populations still low, governments and businesses need to get creative in order to revitalise city centres.
“There’s no doubt Brisbane is continuing to feel a hangover from the COVID lockdowns and restrictions that people have experienced over the past year or so,” Zahra said.
“More people are working flexibly and are choosing to stay at home rather than go into the office, and that’s having a devastating impact on CBD retailers, in particular small businesses, who are just not getting the same numbers of customers through their doors as they were pre-COVID,” he said.
‘Friday in the City’ is a six-week campaign running from 21 May 21 to 25 June. For more visit the campaign website at https://www.visitbrisbane.com.au/the-city/fridays.
April retail spending buoyant
Meantime, figures released last Friday by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) show $31 billion was spent in stores and online in April – an increase of 1.1 per cent compared to March and up 25.1 per cent on the same time last year.
ARA CEO Paul Zahra said whilst comparisons against the 2020 lockdown period are complex, retail trade remains healthy overall, and Australia’s economy continues to bounce back from the worst of the pandemic.
