Costco’s first New Zealand store underway

Opening date uncertain due to COVID-19.

Warehouse retailer Costco has delayed plans to open the first two new stores in New Zealand.

Costco announced in June last year that it planned to build a store in the Westgate  town centre in Auckland, with construction of the three-level mega outlet scheduled to start in October.

However, the official opening date of the has remained uncertain due to COVID-19 restrictions but it is now likely to be in 2022 rather than later this year.

Costco is also actively looking for sites in Christchurch and Wellington.

Westgate is one of New Zealand's largest master planned urbanisation projects which has been developed by New Zealand Retail Property Group over the last 20 years.

Costco currently has 11 stores in Australia with a twelfth planned for the Lake Macquarie district in New South Wales, which will be the company’s first regional outlet.
