Iconic Staples Center to undergo name change

Fans lament the end of the ‘stationery’ moniker.
One of America’s most iconic stadiums will undergo a controversial name change next year when LA’s Staples Center becomes the Crypto.com Arena.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Crypto.com paid the Anschutz Entertainment Group A$962 million for the 20-year naming rights, the biggest venue naming rights deal in US history.
Fans were quick to roast the arena’s name change and vowed to keep calling it the Staples Center, while acknowledging it was strange to have such sentimental attachment to a company that sells stationery.
One fan tweeted: ‘Wow they did it, they came up with a worse name than Staples Center’.
The famous stadium, which opened in 1999, got its original name from one of its sponsors, the office supply company Staples, now operating as three separate entities following the company’s sale to private equity group Sycamore.
The arena continues to utilise the former Staples all caps logo which was phased out by that company in 2019.
