New rules for business waste

Bin there, done that from today.

Effective today (1 July),  the NSW Government will introduce mandatory Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) requirements, changing how businesses manage waste.

Organisations will need to separate food and garden waste into a dedicated stream, helping divert organics from landfill and turn them into compost.

Other states are rolling out similar systems, with most aiming for widespread access by 2030.

For businesses, bin provision will depend on how their waste is collected, which may be through a council service or private waste service companies.

Relevant premises include the following:
  • supermarkets
  • premises in which food or drink is prepared or provided including:
  • correctional complexes, including correctional centres
  • centre-based childcare facilities
  • educational establishments including schools, universities and TAFE
  • hospitals including public hospitals, private health facilities and mental health facilities
  • seniors housing for which the council does not provide a regular collection service for the transportation of residual waste
  • food and drink premises such as restaurants, cafes, takeaway food and drink premises, pubs and bars
  • hotel or motel accommodation
  • registered clubs that hold a liquor licence
