New Zealand office supplies market in the spotlight
New Penfold study reveals category winners and losers.
The New Zealand office and workplace supplies (OWS) market will be in the spotlight this year following Penfold Research’s announcement of a major new research study.
The new report - Office & Work Supplies in New Zealand, 2022-2024 (4th edition) - will commence April and is scheduled to be published in the second half of 2022.
A recent analysis of New Zealand OWS imports highlights that while the country has handled the pandemic well, there have been major category winners and losers across the market.
Penfold Research’s view is that despite current elevated Covid-19 cases and low confidence levels, operators should be looking and planning past this – towards the post-pandemic rebalancing.
“I expect a bumpy road ahead as the country reopens and the ‘new’ market equilibrium settles in,” Andrew Penfold, principal of Penfold Research, said.
“With ongoing lower rates of centralised office working and more home/remote working - both the place and tools/products for work and study have irrevocably shifted.
“In this environment virtually all operators will be compelled to adjust their strategies and business models” he said.
Tracking of OWS imports into New Zealand over the last four years highlights the split in traditional category growth patterns.
While paper and office-based categories have been negatively impacted (particularly in 2020) these have been balanced by strong performances in sectors such as workwear and safety, art and craft, furniture and technology accessories and consumables.
