Office print volumes to be impacted by virus
Job losses and offsite workers lessen demand.
If the US is any guide, a massive number of fewer pages could be printed by Australian businesses as a result of the coronavirus.
Research firm InfoTrends has looked at various industry verticals in the US, and forecast huge print reductions resulting from job losses and staff working from home.
The company estimated that up to 80 billion fewer pages could be printed by US businesses as a result of a two-month lockdown due to the pandemic.
InfoTrends said the that the hardest hit verticals in terms of job losses in the US will be:
- Retail
- Accommodation and food services
- Arts and entertainment
Best-and worst-case impact from those three verticals are the elimination of from 12 to 24 billion pages from total US office print volume.
Modestly impacted industries for job losses include:
- Manufacturing
- Transport & warehousing
- Administration & waste services
- Construction
- Real estate & rental
- Finance & insurance
For these industries, print reductions from job loss range from 15 to 21 billion prints for 2020.
The company said that while some printing for optional purposes will continue, printing that may have been required by a business process may have to quickly move to digital.
The verticals that are most impacted by work at home are:
- Education
- Professional services
- Information
- Company management
- Manufacturing
- Finance & insurance
- Real estate & rental
Best-and worst-case estimates for lost print due to working at home for the above verticals are from 24 billion to 47 billion pages.
