Officeworks reports surge in home office sales

At first it was toilet paper, now it’s shelves of computer accessories that are being emptied.

Officeworks has reported a strong boost in demand for technology and home office supplies as workers and schoolchildren are encouraged to work and study from home because of the coronavirus.

The most in-demand products include monitors, home printers, computer accessories, cables and standing desks.

Swivel chairs and standing desks are also in short supply as thousands of employees scramble to set up home offices.

People are also going to Officeworks to buy sanitation products as supermarkets face supply shortages.

Computer monitors are among a popular item, with one Officeworks employee reportedly saying, “It’s our toilet paper.”

“We have seen a spike in technology and home office products such as monitors, home printers, computer accessories, cables and sit-stand desks, products that all help our customers work remotely,” Michael Howard, Officeworks acting managing director told Business Insider Australia.

“Customers are also responding to an increased focus on hygiene and cleanliness, with strong demand across cleaning and sanitising products,” he said.

According to one Twitter report, some JB Hi-Fi stores had sold out of ethernet cables and adaptors.
