REDUCE RECYCLE REUSE

As your business grows so does your environmental impact’.

Environment strategy used to be the exclusive purview of big brands. Now we live in a time when even the smallest business talks about the environmental imperative and individuals are encouraged to reduce, recycle and reuse.

Clients expect their suppliers to have recycling systems in place and indeed to promote these activities as part of their brand values.  Green factors make good business sense. Planet Ark’s survey shows 43 per cent of outsourcing companies find green supply chains play a role in the selection process of prospective clients and partners. Favouring companies that demonstrate recycling and cost saving initiatives makes sense to the green bottom-line.

Workplaces are well positioned to collect food waste, scraps, tea-bags, coffee grinds, cups and compost in addition to recycling paper, cans and bottles. Companies can do their bit to supply reusable items such as coffee mugs, water bottles and reusable lunch boxes to their staff.

Managers should ensure recycling systems are regularly maintained and easily identified.  Bin design and appearance influences disposal behaviour, so when choosing bins, opt for ones with hygiene openings that are colour coded and easy to identify, for example: Lime green for organics and black for recyclables.

Ensure bins, especially around the openings, are kept clean and well maintained with brightly coloured signs to quickly communicate what items are acceptable for each bin.

Titanium, known for its silver sheen, is resistant to greasy finger prints, making it ideal for workplace rubbish bins.

With a non-slip rim, each canister has two coloured bins, a green one for recycled refuse and a black one for standard scraps making it a rewarding exercise to be environmentally astute.

Weatherdon’s titanium-look range of 10 and 20 litre recycling bins is specifically designed for the workplace to encourage staff to separate their waste from recyclables.

Three things you can do right now to make a difference to the planet:
1. A maintenance check on waste and recycling systems
2. Institute a continuous upgrade and improvement program
3. Involve staff and suppliers in recycling initiatives.
