Stationery sales get a boost from COVID
Benchmark survey confirms increase in newsagency revenue.
Sales of stationery products in newsagencies have picked up as consumers shop and work closer to home as a result of the pandemic.
A survey by newsagency owner and industry commentator Mark Fletcher found that revenue from stationery sales was up nine per cent in November 2021 over 2019, which was the comparable pre-COVID period.
Fifty-six newsagencies supplied sales data for the benchmark survey, which included a mix of city and regional businesses, some of which were in marketing groups. All bar two were not in major capital city shopping centres.
After comparing data from all 56 businesses here are the averages for business performance measurement points and categories, comparing 2021 with 2019:
- Revenue: Up 27%.
- Sales count: Down 6%.
- Basket value: Up 43%.
- Items per basket: Up 10%.
- Average item value: Up 38%.
- Stationery revenue: Up 9%.
- Greeting card revenue: Up 24%.
- Magazines unit sales: Down 15%.
- Toy revenue: Up 45%.
- Gift revenue: Up 30%.
