Stationery takes low profile in National Newsagent Week

Suppliers slow to support channel promotion.

Stationery suppliers have been slow off the mark to support this year’s National Newsagent Week promotion, initiated by Australian Lottery and Newsagents Association (ALNA).

The week-long campaign (19-26 September) has been supported by several channel suppliers, including Bauer Media, News Life Media, John Sands and ANCOL.

However, the Australian Newsagent Week website states that information on the stationery aspect of the promotion is “coming soon”.

Spearheaded by Bauer Media, magazine publishers including, DCThompson, Genera, Just Media, Lovatt’s Media, Marketforce, NewsLifeMedia, Next Media, Puzzler Media Australia, Seymour, Universal and Yaffa Media, have joined forces to launch a $50,000 prize draw competition.

In conjunction with ALNA, the publishing industry is offering customers who purchase a magazine at any newsagent the chance to enter a draw and win $50,000 from now until the conclusion of National Newsagent Week.

The promotion is being supported with point-of-sale material, social media and daily advertising across national and metro newspapers.

Meantime, research firm Ovato has revealed that as a result of the pandemic, magazine sales at newsagents have recorded double digital increases in the food (+35%), home interest (+22%), puzzles (+20%), children’s (32%) and craft (+16%) categories.

Organisers of National Newsagent Week have been approached for comment.
