Supermarket shuts stationery section to support local business
South African Spar store helps a competitor.
In what can only be described as a rare act of corporate kindness, a Spar store in Cape Town elected to remove certain items from its shelves in a bit to support neighbouring small businesses during COVID-19 lockdowns.
As businesses struggled to survive due to the lockdown and employees around South Africa lost their jobs or endured pay cuts, the Palm Grove Spar store (part of a national retail group) played its part by lightening the financial burden for a local stationery business.
Spar’s owners released a statement on its Facebook page saying that: “We will be closing our stationery section and asking that you instead support Hein and his team at PenCafe Stationers.”
