Wollongong dealer hit by ransomware attack
Micon Office National more vigilant and protected.
Wollongong-based dealer Micon Office National has overcome a serious ransomeware attack, which resulted in a three-day shut-down of the business and a costly IT systems reboot.
The Sarcoma ransomware gang, well-known to authorities, claimed Micon Office National as a victim on its darknet leak site last month.
This the fourth time the company has had a cyber security issue in recent times.
Micon Office National owner Mick Cuda told Office Products News that the company did not pay any ransom but did have to close for three days while major work was done to restore systems with the server and Readysell, the point-of-sale and stock control solutions provider.
Cuda said no client files were affected as these are managed by a Sydney software company.
Cyber Daily reported that the cyber gang exfiltrated 34 gigabytes of data from the company and threatened to publish the data within 11 days.
The gang shared three documents as proof of the hack, a pair of invoices, and a medical letter belonging to an employee of Micon Office National.
Cuda told Office Products News that authorities, including the Defence Department, Federal Police and the Australian Signals Directorate, had contacted him as part of their on-going cyber security operations.
Cuda offered the following advice to fellow dealers: “You have to be very diligent and be on the look-out for malware at every level of your operations.”
He added that his company utilised high levels of online security programs but they did not guarantee immunity from cyber attacks.
