Amazon announces mega Melbourne sorting centre
New facility will speed up deliveries nationwide.
Amazon has announced it will open a new sorting centre in Melbourne - the first of its kind in Australia - enhancing delivery speed for customers in Victoria and around the country.
Construction of the 15,600 sqm sorting centre (nearly the size of the Melbourne Cricket Ground) has commenced in Craigieburn, generating more than 700 construction jobs.
Once finished, Amazon says the site at Goodman Group’s Amaroo Business Park will create around 200 local jobs.
Craig Fuller, Amazon Australia's director of operations, said the new centre in Melbourne, which is where already picked and packed orders are sorted by final destination and shipped to customers, signifies the company’s commitment to the state.
“We chose Melbourne as the home of our first Australian fulfilment centre in 2017 and have continued to invest significantly in Victoria, providing employment for hundreds of Melburnians and improving delivery promises for our customers,” Fuller said.
