Stationery sales up at revamped newsagencies

“Transformed” businesses outperform “traditional” cousins.
Newsagencies that have “transformed” their business model have performed much better than “traditional” newsagencies, according to the latest Newsagency Sales Benchmark report.
Carried out by newsagency industry commentator Mark Fletcher (associated with marketing group newsXpress and software firm Tower Systems), the 2024 survey involved input from rural, regional, and suburban newsagencies.
“Transformed newsagencies have successfully expanded beyond the traditional “newsagency” model, often with minimal impact on customer perception. In fact, customer purchasing habits indicate strong support for these evolving businesses,” Fletcher said.
In 2024, stationery sales at “transformed” newsagencies increased by five per cent, compared to a four per cent decline at “traditional” newsagencies.
Fletcher added: “I have observed newsagencies generating substantial revenue (approaching $100,000 annually) from coffee and related products, clothing, and high-end collectibles. The inconsistent categorisation of these segments across stores makes direct benchmarking challenging, but the overall trend is very clear to see.”
