Good afternoon,
News of the merger of two biggest office products distributors in the US was a topical talking point at the GNS supplier awards lunch in Sydney last week.
During an update on the company’s performance, GNS CEO Paul Yardley could not help make a pointed reference to the US deal, given his aspirations to create a unified national distribution business in Australia.
The plan so far has seen the acquisition of smaller players, namely WA Stationery Wholesalers, Satex and V Wholesale.
However, there are two significant pieces missing from the jigsaw – the Bolton brothers’ General/Allstat group and George Rosengas’ Stationers Supply – which combined account for a large slice of the Brisbane and Melbourne markets.
There’s plenty of water to go under the bridge as far as GNS is concerned but the US merger highlights many reasons why consolidation is the way of the future for the broader OP industry.
